Granite blinked in surprise. He hadn't even thought that he would offend his hostess. In her place, he also would have been deeply offended. He was too absorbed in his own problems that he bulled through without even thinking of Starlight's feelings, as he usually did. That was one reason he never got along with the rest of his family. "I'm...sorry," he mewed apologetically, dipping his head briefly. "In my eagerness of planning my new life, I didn't even consider your feelings on the matter. You were here first, and I have no right trying to usurp your home. There is no excuse for being so insensitive." Although he watched the female puma from the corner of his eye, the male averted his eyes from her. "It's true that there isn't much food in the desert, and I should have thought of that before I opened my mouth foolishly."

Starlight narrowed her eyes at him as he began to grovel and apologize. That was more like it. She was still very suspicious of him and didn't trust him at all. Her musles began to relax a little, espcially when he turned his gaze away from her, leaving himself more vulnerable to her attacking him. Her claws, which she now realized had been unsheathed, slid back into her paws. She slowly began to relax a little more but was still very much on her guard. Starlight wasn't sure what to say. He was confusing her. One minute he had been rambling on about how he could beat her in a fight and blah blah blah and now all of a sudden he was apologizing? Maybe he realized that he really wouldn't have that good of odds if a fight did break out between them. Whatever the reason, she still didn't trust him. Starlight sat down on the ledge she was still perched on and licked the fur on one of her fore legs briefly. "At least you realize your mistakes now." She replied plainly though her voice still had a bit of hostility in it..

ooc- He didn't grovel... He only apologized! The thought of groveling would turn any of my characters' stomachs. But I suppose he hasn't been very impressive to Starlight so far! XD
bic- Granite suppressed the feeling to leap at this female and teach her what he was really made of, but he knew that it wasn't right. Even weakened, he knew he could take her. He hadn't lost a battle since he was a youth. Although he clenched his jaw and dug his claws into the dirt at the tone of her voice, he forced himself to remain calm. His hard green eyes turned to meet Starlight, suspicious of her still and not willing to leave himself open for long. “Only because I would do the same in your place. I WON'T make the same mistakes with you, a puma I barely know, that I have with others over the seasons. Perhaps I should leave, since I'm clearly not wanted here, and I did come all this way to be alone if I couldn't find anyone else who can live with me!†Hearing the faint cackling of the coyotes who he was sure were the same pack as the ones who had followed him, the male puma snarled very softly mostly to himself, “I should teach those mutts a lesson in puma revenge for all the trouble they caused me!â€

Starlight watched the male some more, her muscles relaxing a tad more but she remained on her guard. "Yes, maybe it would be best if you go." She replied curtly as she sat down and began to groom herself once more, a nervous habit she did whenever she was uncomfortable or bored. Her gold and green gaze turned back to him, a little softer this time than they were before. "If you head back the way you come but turn sharply and head west before you hit the beginning of the forest, you will eventually run into some sandstone cliffs. You may claim them as your own. I do not hunt there much anymore because they are so far away." She added, a sparkle in her eyes as she watched him, now more with interest than annoyance or hate like she had before. She lay back down on her ledge, her body pointed towards him still but her posture almost completely relaxed now as she smiled slightly at him.

Granite nodded in thanks, hoping that the cliffs were so far away that he wouldn't see this female very much. I was born in the mountains, so high places are where I belong... Starlight's movements were smooth as she lay down at ease. The male puma felt something touch him deep down, but he wasn't sure what the feeling was. Pushing it away, Granite stood to his large paws and took one last drink before turning toward the entrance. “Cliffs are good territory. Hopefully I will find it to be a good place for me. I wish you good hunting in your territory.” The large male stepped out of the den into the colder night air. Taking a big breath as he moved, the puma's sharp eyes caught movement. So. they HAD followed him! A growl began to rumble in Granite's throat as he moved away from the den. It wasn't long before he was attacked by the bold pack that had been trailing his paws, hoping he would weaken. One coyote attack, only to be batted away by a paw. The bite he received from the attacker barely reached his skin because of his thick fur, the same fur that could keep him surprisingly cool in the shade even though it was thick. As the predators circled him, Granite snarled his defiance at them.

Starlight smiled simply at him and nodded her head, blinking her eyes once. Her gaze watched him as he got one more drink before heading out of the cave. When he had made it all the way outside, Starlight rose to her paws once more and strolled down the length of the ledge she had been sitting on the entire time. Her gold and green eyes gazed out into the dim light of the night as she watched his tan shape float through the darkness. She also heard the coyotes but didn't seem to bothered by them. Instead she lay down on the edge of the ledge closest to the entrance of the cave so she could watch him. She couldn't help but admire his strong movements as he batted away a coyote as if it were a ball of yarn and he was a young kitten. Another smile slowly slid across her face as she continued to watch the coyotes one at a time try and take him on with little to no success. Starlight couldn't help but find him interesting. After all, she had been alone most of her life and she found that she actually did like company. In fact it almost felt like she was just now realizing how truly alone she had been before.

Granite was so absorbed in his battle that he didn't even notice that Starlight was watching. Flattening his ears, the puma bared his teeth. The coyotes tried to attack him from all sides, but he managed to strike them away before they did too much damage. Finally, he chose one victim, and attacked it ruthlessly. Leaping at the coyote, he used his superior weight and size to over power it, and snap it's neck. Then, the large male whirled around swiftly for a creature of his size, and attacked the two that had approached him from behind. Slashing with furious claws, he bit one it the shoulder even as he claws out the throat of the other. then he flung the one in his mouth up in the air and killing it with a snap of his teeth. His pelt burned in several places where the coyotes had managed to hit him. Turning the face the rest with his bloodied teeth bared, he found that the remaining two were fleeing. "Come back, cowards, and try your luck with a REAL fighter!" Granite cried, but before long, the coyotes were over the dunes and out of sight.

Starlight purred to herself softly as she watched him fight off the pack of annoying coyotes. She had been planning on getting rid of them for so long that she was glad he had finally done it for her so she didn't have to try and remember to do it. Her golden eyes shone in the dim night darkness as she rested her large tan head on her wide paws, a content sigh running through her body. A soft breeze had picked up and it brushed her coat ever so softly, almost lulling her into a deep sleep. A smile spread across her face as she let out a massive yawn, stretching her jaws wide and revealing her own sharp white fangs. She looked back out of the cave at him, still smiling. "Well done." She said simply, with only the slightest bit of thanks and appreciation in her voice as she said it. She of course would never admit that she was glad he had helped her out with her annoying neighbors but that didn't mean she would let the deed go completely unnoticed.

Beginning to relax a bit after the fight, Granite graciously accepted the thanks and appreciation from Starlight. Perhaps she had only shown a little, but it was much better in his eyes than if she had lavished him with praise. As the puma poked a body with his large tawny paw, his stomach growled slightly. He hadn't eaten in so long, and he was hungry. The bodies of the coyotes were still food, and they would sustain him until he could make another kill. Ravenously he tore apart one of the bodies, and it didn't take him long to devour it, leaving only bones. Then he remembered the female, who was most likely still watching him. Dragging the last two bodies over to Starlight even as he ignored the sting of his wounds, Granite place one in front of her as an offering. “Please accept this gift from me, for the water,” he mewed aloud. After drinking and eating, as well as the battle, his voice was beginning to smooth back out. His voice was deep and clear, like still water, and his stony amber eyes stared calmly at Starlight. “I couldn't offer you anything before, but this kill is all I have to repay you with.” That was not the entire reason why he was offering a piece of his kill to her, but how could he explain this impulse that had fallen over him? How could he explain the warm feeling he felt at looking at her. She wasn't unpleasant to look at. No, in fact, she was quite attractive. Granite pushed away the thoughts, waiting for Starlight's response.

Starlight dipped her head in thanks and smiled at him, her golden green eyes shining with interest as she continued to watch him. There was something about him that was different than any other puma she had met before. She wasn't quite sure what it was but she did know that she liked it. Perhaps it was the fact that he didn't let her push him around and he actually took charge when it was appropriate, unlike all the other filthy males she had met in her lifetime. She was a very strong willed female and didn't like to be told what to do but she did need to be put in her place sometimes. And now she found that for some reason, she didn't want him to leave. She wanted him to stay with her so she could try and figure him out. "I know that we had a slight disagreement earlier but, if you care to stay here for the night you may." She replied with a hint of softness in her voice. She didn't let her face or eyes give away any other parts of her emotions as she kept her head raised and her front paws crossed in front of her as she waited for his response.

Granite pondered Starlight's invitation for a moment. What had changed the female's opinion? Was it the killing? Was it his manner? Did it even really matter why? She had her reasons for what she did, and he had his reasons. The male puma knew he couldn't reject the offer out of hand. Not only was it polite, he found he actually wanted to spend the night. Perhaps to speak with her or perhaps speak to her or perhaps both. Either way, he found he wanted to know more about his new acquaintance. Granite's natural wariness prevented him from thinking of her as a friend...yet. “If it doesn't cause you too much trouble, I would prefer to spend the night here,” he said smoothly, quickly devouring the final carcass, which he had kept for himself. Even as he kept his face as stony as his name suggested, the male puma's voice was a bit warm. “May I sleep anywhere, or is there one place you don't wish me to be?” Even as he began to feel a bit more comfortable, now that he was fed and watered, his manner of speech marked him as a puma from another region from Starlight.

Starlight rose to her paws, a slight smile still on her face. She stretched her legs out in front of her and behind her, her muscles rippling underneath her tawny coat. She let out a large yawn that made her jaws stretch wide, revealing once again her dagger like teeth. "You may sleep where ever you feel fit." She replied, jumping down off her ledge and sniffing at the coyote carcass for a moment before ripping it to pieces and eating it, her stomach that she just now realized had been growling now stopped all together. She picked the other body up in her massive jaws and lept back up to her ledge, stretching up onto her hind legs up she could reach a small tunnel in the side of the wall near the ceiling. There she was able to put the remainings of the meal for safe keeping. When she had successfully stored Granite's kill, she strolled across her ledge, heading deeper into the cave before laying down once again. She stretched her front legs out so that her large paws dangled off the side of the ledge and she glanced over her shoulder at him before laying her head down on her paws, her eyes and ears still alert as she waited to see what he would do.

Granite watched Starlight for a moment as she stored the rest of the kill. Now that he was full, he was a bit sleepy and feeling better that he had for a while. As he entered the cave, the male puma brushed briefly past Starlight, his tawny pelt touching her only for a moment as he moved to inspect the cave. After investigating, he picked what seemed like a good spot. near the back to the cave, he found a corner that would be easy to defend, but also gave him a good view of Starlight. She had given him so much help, but he didn't trust her enough to turn his back on her. As he settled in, he muttered softly to himself, forgetting that caves could echo, “Not what I'm used to for a bed, but I suppose I'll have to get used to it if I'm going to make my home in this kind of a place up at those cliffs. I don't think they'll be as high as the mountains, but at least it'll be as close as I can come. I can survive wherever I want to, no matter what anyone says.” As he laid his large head on his tawny paws, The male puma narrowed his eyes a bit, staring at Starlight. What did he really know about her? Only that this was her territory. So why couldn't he reason out the mix of feels he felt when he looked at her?

Starlight flinched a little at his touch but then relaxed instantly before he moved away from her. She lept back up onto her ledge and padded all the way to the end of it that faced the back of the cave and was overlooking where Granite had chosen to sleep. She shook her head and rolled her eyes as he complained briefly about his bed but let him finish his conversation with himself before laying down on the edge of the ledge once more. She hung her large paws over the side of the ledge and laid her head down on top of them, her gold and green gaze coming to rest on him for a minute. She examined him thoughtfully before slowly letting her eyes close, a content and sleepy sigh escaping her. "Good night." She purred softly into the dimness of the cave, a smile beginning to play at her mouth as she waited to see if he would answer her.

Granite's ears perked forward when Starlight spoke. It had been so long since anyone had wished him well, perhaps not since he was a cub sleeping in the den with his mother. Then he had grown, and that was when everything had started to go wrong... Shaking free from his memories, he thought only of the lovely puma who was laying not too far from him. “May your rest be peaceful,†he replied simply. The male was aware how strange it sounded against Starlight's simple 'good night', but that phrase was one he always responded automatically with. A fault of his upbringing, or so he always thought. Although he closed his stony green eyes, his ears remained alert. Good habits always stay ingrained, and the male puma had learned a long time ago that light sleepers who kept alert even as they rested survived longer than the unwary.
