A tawny female dog sighed as she looked around the run-down, but spacious room. It was near the top of the building, but the stairway was collapsed. The only way to get into the room was to take a round-about way through a window. The dog put her paws over her dark brown muzzle. Her mate, Valor, had chosen this place because usually only cats came around here, and he felt that the pups would be safer because of the difficult entryway. Yes the pups... It was difficult to believe that the tiny creatures were inside of her, growing. They barely showed, yet the female Razorback could almost feel them. What would they look like? Would there be a male like Valor, strong and handsome? Or a female like herself, petite yet skilled?

A large agouti colored dog sighed as he came in through the window, carrying a bag filled with food he pilfered from the humans. It was by pure luck that he found this old rundown building. Because of the collapsed stairway, humans couldn't get to them. Since the only intruders he'd ever run into in this place were cats, he felt that it was a safe place for his mate and pups. "I know it's not much, but at least we'll be safe from the humans. Plus this place is better compared to sleeping in the streets." He barked as soon as he spotted the tawny-colored female looking around, pushing the bag of food towards her. "There should be enough here for you. I can always find something for myself later." The mixed breed sighed again as he curled up on the ground, thinking about his next step from this point.

Zaida nosed her way into the bag, wondering to herself if she should tell Valor about the visit from their 'neighbor', a Siamese half-breed cat who lived nearby. She had been surprised to find Zaida here, and when she heard that Valor was Zaida's mate, the cat had acted a bit strangely and left. Perhaps they knew each other? But she was sure that if Valor knew the cat, he would recognize the scent she had left on the wall when she rubbed against it. These thoughts were pushed back when Zaida saw the amount of food in there. Since she had been a stray, she hadn't seen this much food. Taking out a good portion of the food, she nudged what was left at Valor. "This will be enough for us, Val-or," she barked warmly, wondering how he had gotten all this food at once. The female Razorback began to eat hungrily. She had begun to feed her appetite grow as her belly started to show small signs of the pups.

Valor quickly picked up on a cat scent he hadn't smelled in a while. The stray became certain of who the scent belonged to as soon as found it all over the wall. "Zaida, did a dark-pointed cat come here earlier?" He asked as he began sniffing around for the cat's trail. "I can't say she's a friend, but she's not really an enemy. I suppose saying that we don't see eye to eye is the best way to put it. Anyway, let me know if you see her again. I'll have to speak with her since we're apparently in her territory. We have to be intruding since she made such a strong scent mark." I had a feeling that I'd run into Saphira here, but I didn't think we were stealing her home from her. The agouti dog took a small portion of the leftovers for himself, saving what remained for another purpose.

Zaida nodded her blunt head. "Yes, yes. I saw her. She said her name was Saphira. Very nice cat! She lives nearby, but said level below this one good rat hunting. She had started marking wall before she noticed me. She smelled I was with pups, and understood why I would choose this place. Said as long as I didn't mess with her rats, she would not mind me being around. She asked who my mate was, and when I told her, she seemed surprised. It is good you know her." The female Razorback dog went back to her food, but then lifted her head after a bit. She looked out of the window and sighed. "Is there any news from the streets?" /I haven't left this place since my belly began to extend... I wonder what Jorani would say if she saw where I am now?/

Valor rolled his eyes and shook the dust out of his fur. "Well, that's not surprising. I didn't know you the last time I saw her, so she's probably surprised to hear that a lone wolf like me now has a mate." He muttered to Zaida. "Besides, it's been a while since we saw each other. She's probably shocked to know that I never got picked up by the humans who run the fights." The mixed breed took a glance out the window. "There's not much to say about news in the streets. Not much happens in this city. Dogs get taken off the streets for fights and the gangs find new recruits to use. Other than that, nothing special happens here." The agouti dog glanced at his mate for a moment. It makes sense that she would ask though. I told her she had to stay here for her own good. She's been living here for a while. You think she'd be used to the ongoings in this city by now.

Zaida suppressed a sigh. /It's so boring up here... If only I could go down and walk around.../ That's when something occurred to her. "Val-or, can we take a short walk around?" she asked, "It's too stuffy up here, and I have been in here a while. I need to walk on the actual ground and get some real exercise, not walk in circle up here!" The Razorback wasn't sure what her mate would say to her proposition. At this point, she didn't care as long as she could get out of the den even for a little while! It was a nice enough den, not as good as her small cosy one was mind you, but nice and safe enough to raise pups in. Just not nice enough to spend months of her life in!

Valor looked at his mate and glanced out the window. I should've known she'd ask me something like that. Then again, she has been cooped up here for a while. It's never good for a dog to stay closed in. "I suppose you could use the exercise and fresh air. I also see your point about it being boring up here." He muttered, sounding a bit nervous with the idea. "Alright, we'll go for a walk, but on one condition. If we see any humans, we come straight back here. The last thing I want is a repeat of what happened the last time you ran into a human." The agouti mixed breed began to stretch his legs before heading towards the window, motioning for Zaida to follow him. I can't shake the feeling that this is a bad idea, but she does need to spend some time away from this place.

"Yes, Val-or!" Zaida said in a teasing tone, before jumping out the window and onto the roof. Sometimes Valor could be so strict! With the constant changed Zaida was going through, her hormones had chaged her a bit without her realizing it. She then leaped in through a window to the next floor and ran down the stairs, almost running into the wall at the bottom in her eagerness to get out. Her belly felt heavier than this morning. When she stepped out of the building, the Cambodian Razorback sniffed the air. /It smells a little damp and there are clouds covering the sky... too bad.. I was hoping to feel sun on my face. I wonder if it shall rain?/

Valor ran after his mate in an instant. "Hey! Take it easy! The vans tend to pick up energetic dogs like you, remember?!" He howled as he managed to catch up with Zaida, sniffing the air and looking to the sky. "I never liked rain. It washes away old and fresh scents. Perhaps today wasn't a good day for this. I won't be able to tell if anything dangerous is nearby or not." I can't help but feel that something bad is going to happen, even if I'm with her. "I really don't like it when things are like this. Humans are more likely to catch us if we're out in the rain since it makes our senses weaker. I wouldn't worry if I was out alone, but I'm not willing to put you at risk. We should go back."

Zaida nuzzled her mate, appreciating his strong, yet pleasent scent. "You worry too much! The rain has not started. It may not start for sometime yet. That is the way with weather! I will not go back in yet! I will not let weather destroy perfect stroll." The Razorback turned away from Valor and began to walk down the mostly deserted street. The other building around appeared just as run-down as Zaida and Valor's new den. This was why it was a place that very few humans came to. Although Valor was right about rain weakening their powers of scent, Zaida had always felt that the rain gave the world a new beginning, but then again, she was more of an optimistic type while her mate was more pessimistic. "I wonder what our pups will be like, when they are born?" she mused aloud.

Valor shook his head as he looked to the sky. The clouds look pretty dark to me. It'll probably start raining any second now. The mixed breed then returned his attention to Zaida, quickening his pace to make sure the tawny female didn't get too far ahead of him. "I'm more concerned with their health rather than their personalities. There's no guarantee they'll all make it when they're born. Besides, you won't be able to distinguish their personalities right away. The most I can promise you is that they'll all be different." He muttered to his mate, shaking his head as he thought he felt a rain drop land on his nose. "I really don't like the dark color of those clouds. It looks like we may be in for a downpour. We should make this walk quick. The last thing I want is to get my fur wet."

Zaida gave Valor a playful shove. "I don't think a 'big strong' dog like you will melt in rain, Val-or!" she teased her mate. Zaida herself loved the rain. She loved the crisp clean scent it left, the feel as it cooled her body down... but then again, she was from Cambodia, and the weather there could be rainy more often than here in the dry climate of Mexico. This was why Zaida welcomed every rain shower that came along. There were always puddles to drink from, and the dirty ones were fun to splash in... would their pups see the good as well as the evil in rain? "Perhaps we not see personality at first, but my mother always said to me that pups grow up too quickly. It might not seem to long from now when they are old enough to leave den for the first time. Our pups, they will be fine. They have your strength and hardiness. Cambodian dogs, they too are hardy. I see no reason to fear, for they are getting good treatment as they grow."

Valor began scratching himself as he felt the falling rain hit his agouti pelt, giving him an uncomfortable feeling. I hate the rain. It always seems to foreshadow something truly dangerous. The last time it rained like this was during that hunting trip back when I was still a pup in training. The rain made it hard to track our target, and things went bad as a result. We were lucky to get out of there alive. I've done my best to avoid being out in the rain because of that. He then shook the water out of his fur as the rain began coming down harder. "It's not as bad as I thought it would be, but I was right to say we 'd be in for a downpour. We should go back inside before we get completely soaked." The mixed breed barked to his mate. "A dog can get sick if he's out in the rain for too long."

Although reluctant, Zaida knew that it was a good idea to get out of the rain. There was a small chance she would catch a cold, and with the pups, she couldn't afford to do that. She did NOT, however, want to go back to the den! Once she returned, who knew how many opportunities she'd have to take another walk? The Cambodian ducked into a smallish sized hole in the wall that would be big enough for two dogs. She shook herself, the arch of fur on her back dropping a bit from the weight of water. "This is out of the rain!" she barked.
