Valor shook his head before figuring something out. "Now I get it. This is your way of saying I've been keeping you on a short leash, isn't it? Look, I know I don't let you out into the streets too often, but it's for your own good." He muttered to his mate as he squeezed his way into the hole. "The last time I left you alone and out in the open, you almost ended up in the fights. I can't afford to let that happen, especially when you're in your current condition." The mixed breed then glanced at the rainy streets. "Besides, being out in the rain brings up bad memories for me. You should know by now that I don't like to be reminded of my past. Thinking about it tends to bring out the worst in me. Anyway, we should go back home once the rain lets up a little."

"Well we shall have to make new memories for you then!" Zaida replied. She knew her mate's more colorful past was a hard one, but she didn't like how he dwelled on it. She could especially tell when he was thinking about the past because he became a bit snappy. With her own changes in hormones, more and more Zaida felt like snapping back and that was a new feeling for the gentle dog. "I know you wish to keep us safe, Val-or" The Razorback laid her head on her mate's strong shoulder. "Yet once I am far along with pups, I will not be able to move from den until they are born and old enough to leave themselves. Every moment out I can take, I must for I do not know how long it will be until I will be in den for long period of time. You can understand that, can you not?"

Valor glanced at his mate. "I do understand, but do you remember what I told you about this city when we first met? This place is more dangerous than it looks, Zaida. The humans and the gangs aren't the only ones you need to be wary of. There's also some strays who choose to travel alone. They can be just as hostile as the gangs." He muttered in a serious tone as he returned his gaze to the rainy streets, seeing the the rain was beginning to let up. "I know you want to walk around before you get confined for the next few months, but you also have to consider all the hidden dangers of this city. A dog in your condition wouldn't stand a chance, nor would her pups. We'll have to keep a close eye on our litter, otherwise who knows what'll happen to them if they wander off." I really don't want to think about what could happen if any one of them is ever found wandering about alone in the streets.

"Val-or..." Zaida pushed her nose into her mate's fur, which almost obscured her black muzzle. "I know this city is dangerous, but think of all good dogs that are here. Willow, she is a good friend, Rifle was kind... I can think of so many more! When you show kindness to others, there is better chance that they return same kindness. I know you are not like that, but I am. Almost every dog deserves a chance." The Cambodian Razorback turned her head from Valor, sadness in her dark brown eyes. "But no matter how many good-friends there might be, I would never take chance with puppies. Pups are too trusting, and when dealing with others you need a little caution. They would not last a moment out her alone." She could almost picture one of her pups, lost, alone, and afraid, only to be found by a dog like Feroz. A growl arose in Zaida throat as she snarled fiercely, "But if any dog, cat or human tries to harm my pups, I will have them fleeing in horror as if from Anubis-beast![/b]" The ferocity of her own words startled Zaida, but she knew she meant every word of it... Was this the feeling her mother had described, the time when she had fought off the tiger to save one of Zaida's younger brothers when he was little? She felt afire with the need to keep the tiny lives within her safe.[/color]

Valor shook his head at his mate's words. How can she be so naive? Doesn't she know that even the nicest dogs can use her for their own needs? Looks can be deceiving. "Well, at least you're starting to think like a mother." The mixed breed muttered as he noticed the rain stop, stepping out in to the wet streets. "I think we spent enough time out of the den. We should head back before the humans come out to look for dogs. Like I said before, they sometimes come out during the rain since it's easier to steal a dog off the streets when the ground is wet." And the sooner I get her back to the den, the better. I know she still needs freedom, but it's not a good idea to give her too much of it right now.

Zaida, who was about to step out, turned back to Valor, her teeth bared. "What do you mean STARTING!?" she snarled. Her mate's words struck a nerve deep inside of the female Razorback. Although she tended to be rather laid back, this struck her maternal instincts. The idea that she would EVER allow her pups to be put in danger angered her. "The only reason I agreed to the new den and the confinement was because of the pups! I do NOT appreciate the lack of confidence you seem to have in me, or that you think that I would allow any truths I believe, or you believe for that matter, to endanger the pups! In my family, mother dogs have been fiercer than the largest tiger, and I have bred true to my family!" Zaida loved Valorso much, and yet she knew she would fight him, or even Feroz to keep her pups safe. She had known this from the moment she realized she was carrying the pups. She would do whatever was necessary.

Valor rolled his eyes. This is the best she can do when it comes to ferocity? I think she should leave protecting them to me. "First of all, I've been on hunts in which our targets were bears. If you want to intimidate me, you're going to have to kick it up a notch. Second of all, I had my suspicions about your naivety when you learned how to defend yourself." He barked to his mate, sounding a bit cold. "Zaida, who did you find to teach you how to fight? When I ran into you about a month ago, I picked up the scent of another male on your fur. I heard rumors about a girl-chasing coydog roaming the streets and seeking favor from just about every female he runs into. The last rumor that I heard about that worthless mongrel involved him setting his sights on a female of a foreign breed." She's the only true foreigner in this city! That half-breed will pay if he has his sights set on my mate!
ooc: I really wanted to get this out of the way before the pups were born. Besides, Valor was going to find out about this one way or another.

/How fierce does he expect me to be when I know I can't afford a fight, even with him! I can't do anything that might endanger the pups!/ "Manners and good acts are NOT naivety! You are just too suspicious!"Zaida flinched back at bit when she heard Valor mention the rumor. "I was taught by dog named Chucho. He was nice, kind, but it was nothing more than mentoring and friendship! He was only one who would teach me! No one else wanted to, and I needed a mentor! He made me promise only to use it in self-defense, but I planned that anyway. I do not see why this worries you, or why it is any of your business!" She glared at her mate. Males could be so infuriating, especially her mate! Why did he insist on being so stubborn? It's almost like he didn't listen to what she said!

Valor began to growl. How stupid can she be?! Males like that half-breed always target the most naive females! He's only teaching her to win her over! "Zaida, how much do you know about that dog? From what I heard, that coydog is a smooth-talker who fools females into falling for him! He's not the sort you should be hanging around with!" He snarled to his mate coldly. "I know you'll be more careful from now on, but for your own good, I want you to stay away from that half-breed! He's only teaching you how to fight because he thinks you'll eventually fall for him! He's nothing more than a girl-chasing con artist!" The large agouti dog then kicked over a nearby trash can in an effort to calm himself down before looking around the corner for any humans or unfamiliar dogs.

"No! You're wrong! You do not know him! He is my friend, and I have made it clear a number of times that it will go no further! Besides, you cannot run my life! One of the reasons I left my home was because I was being controlled and I will NOT take it form anyone, even you!" Whirling around awkwardly, Zaida stormed out of the hiding place. She didn't care that it was still drizzling or if Valor followed. She had had enough of that conversation, and she did as she always did when she felt backed in a corner, ran away. Valor was her mate, but she was starting to wonder if she really loved him, or the idea of him. At least Chucho respects me... The thought caused the female Razorback to freeze in place. What am I saying? I love VAL-OR, and just because this is no rabbit hunt does not mean I should give up! Did I not train to be with him? Did I not give up all opportunities for him? No, I have to keep my ground.

Valor placed a paw on his muzzle before shaking the water out of his fur as the rain stopped completely. I should've known! She won't trust my judgement since I'm too protective! Then again, my only proof to my claims are rumors. Maybe I am being too cautious. "Zaida! Come back! It's not safe for a female in your condition to be running around alone!" The large agouti dog barked as he ran after his mate, panting a bit as he caught up with the tawny-colored dog. "Maybe I am being a bit too suspicious, but that's because I've been in this city a lot longer than you have. I know just how dangerous it really is. That rumor about your coydog friend being a girl-chaser might not be true, but the rumor about him being a con artist just happens to be true. The girl-chaser thing might've started from the fact that he mainly targets females. Besides, you know I'm only acting like this because I don't want anything to happen to you." The mixed breed then looked to the sky, seeing that the clouds were beginning to clear up. "We should head back now. We've spent enough time outside the den for one day."

Zaida refused to look at Valor, her sword-shaped tail was down instead of up like it usually was. "I know that, Val-or. It is just...well, if dogs at least tried to reach out to each other, perhaps the danger would be less. We could work together to keep dangers away when they come, and cooperate to lessen number of dogs humans take." The female dog glanced at her mate. "Aye, I am tired now. Let us go back." The female dog didn't remember the way back to the den because the first time she had gone to the den was the last time she had been out. So she waited for Valor to lead.

Valor rolled his eyes as he began leading his mate back to their den. "You make it sound like such a solution will be easy to achieve. In order to gain full cooperation, a dog was be capable of reason, and not every dog can be reasoned with. If the opposite was true, gangs like the Asesinos wouldn't exist." He muttered to the pregnant female as he headed inside the old rundown building and up the stairs to the floor just below their home. "Anyway, it doesn't really surprise me to see you tired already. Females in your condition always tire out more easily. It's funny when you think about it. Our pups haven't been born yet, and they're already wearing you out." Once they are born, they'll be wearing us both out. Let's just hope I can handle it. I was never very good with little ones.

Zaida sighed to herself. /Yes, but because no one is willing to even try, it will never happen. How can dogs reason when they believed everyone else is unreasonable, and thus won't try to reach out to each other? Oh Valor... if only you understood. We're so close, yet worlds apart.../ "That is because they eat more than I do, and I am feeding them. When they are born, it will take the strength of two dogs to keep them under control!" The female Razorback smiled faintly as she walked up the stairs. Were there more than before? "I remember when I was a pup, my siblings and I woke my dad up in the middle of the night to play with him. I suppose that was because when I was very little, he was often out hunting with Master..."

"So, your father was around for you when you were little? You should consider yourself lucky, love. At least your father was around for you. My father was a purebred show dog. He was always on the road making his master money, so I very rarely saw him when I was a puppy." Valor muttered to his mate before heading through the window entrance to their den, pulling out a soft and torn up cushion for the tawny-colored female to lie on. "My mother did show me a little affection when I still lived with her, but she was a breeding dog. By nature, they don't grow attached to their offspring. Knowing her, she'll have already forgotten all about me and her past litters so she can place her focus on the litter she's probably caring for now. The only ones I was ever really close to were my full siblings, and I don't even know what became of them. I was the first to be adopted in the litter, so I can only assume they're living with some strange humans and enjoying their lives as lazy house pets." Mother always did say we would be adopted by kind humans who would love us and be there for us forever, but she was wrong about the human who adopted me. He just threw me away when I proved to be useless to him. She'd probably have a hard time believing that not all humans are good if she learned about what became of me.
