The chocolate lab padded down the strange smelling street. His claws scratching the concrete sidewalk as he walks. He looked around and saw garbage cans knocked over. His comforting brown eyes were darting around, here and there, looking for something to eat. A strange scent then came to his nose.
He lifted his head and breathed in deeply to smell garbage, pollution, and something else... not garbage but something like food. He looked around and turned his head to realize it was coming from an alley. He immediately trotted down the alley, half covered in shadows, toward the back where he found a garbage can. Of course, garbage. Nicodemus thought to himself. Well,it'll have to do. He thought to himself. He then opened his jaws wide and closed them around the black garbage bag, he ripped it open with little effort and foul smelling rotten food came pouring out on the street in front of him. But then he saw a semi-good piece of meat, like a piece of ruby in a pot of rocks. Better than nothin he thought, picked it up softly and dropped it so it was seperated from the foul smelling, garbage. He ate it slowly, savoring the taste.

A female fawn-colored dog strolled about the streets, still not quite used to the city she found herself in. As the sun shined down from the sky, you could see a line of fur on her back that seemed to grow in the opposite direction from the rest of her coat. Perhaps I made a mistake in choosing a place like this as my new home. I may be able to avoid the humans here, but it's too confusing. Spotting a nearby trash can, she kicked it with her hind leg and began digging into the garbage as it fell out of the fallen receptacle. "It's just like I thought. Even as a stray, I'm still depending on the humans for survival. It's just pitiful." She muttered as she managed to pull out an old bone with some bits of meat still stuck to it. "I'll never be a self-dependant street dog at this rate." Hearing a faint whining, she turned around to find a puppy staring at her hungrily. The ridgeback dog rolled her eyes before pushing her bone towards the small dog with a faint smile on her face. After seeing the pup run away with the bone, she began to cough from what sounded like lack of air. "Stupid collar!" She snarled as she tried to pull a worn-out red leather collar over her head and off her neck. "That worthless human put it on too tight! As if leaving me to die back in the forests wasn't bad enough! Does he want me to suffocate?!"

Nicodemus stopped what he was doing, he pricked his folded triangular ears toward a muffled snarl, almost as if it was frustrated. "Is it me or do these streets give me a little bit of the dang heeby jeebies." He murmured to himself. He looked down at what he was eating and saw there was a little left, he picked it up in his jaws and trotted over to the noise. He then saw a fawn colored female, he saw the frustrated look on her face, and her trying to get the collar off her neck. Nicodemus dropped the small, hockey-puck sized piece of meat at her paws and closed his jaws around the dog's collar, he bit it as hard as he could and tried to pull it in the opposite direction of her body. He groaned with effort and it eventually slid off without warning. He fell backwards on his side, got right back up on his paws and spit the dirty thing out of his mouth. He looked around and saw the female in front of him, he raised his tail a bit in greeting and barked in his trade-marked deep voice "sup, my names Nicodemus."He then growled to himself realizing he just spoke slang to a stranger.

The female looked down at the collar as she began gasping for air. She then gave her rescuer an emotionless look. Why did he help me? I thought strays were supposed to look out for themselves. Still, I guess I do owe this stranger something for helping me. After all, I probably would've choked on my collar if he hadn't come around. "You don't have to growl at yourself over how you speak. I'm probably as much a foreigner in this city as you are." The female dog muttered to Nicodemus as she looked away from him. "Anyway, my name is Fawn. Now that we know each other's names, there's something I'd like to know. Why did you help me? Most strays wouldn't have bothered with helping a dog they don't know, not unless there's something in it for them. So, what do you want from me?"

As he listened to Fawn's questions, he shrugs and says "Well, I couldn't just leave ya there to choke to death could I? Ever since I was a lil pup, I used to feel bad for dogs that were hurt or injured. Look, I'm sorry if ya think I'm a head case, but its just my personality." A smile began to curl up as he saw the emotionless look on her face, then he adds "oh, and whenever i speak this way, dogs think I'm a whackjob. So I try to avoid it." He then sits down on the cold street. He pushes the piece of meat over to her, gesturing her to eat it. He then looks up at the sky, and sees that the sun is high and that the alleyway is not half-covered in shadows anymore. He then saw the stripe of fur on her back that seems to scream in his mind, Rhodesian Ridgeback. He then looked at the piles of foul-smelling trash, he tried to hold his breath to not breath in the disgusting odor but then had to breath at some point.

Fawn shook her head at Nicodemus's actions. What's with this male? He saves my life, then gives me his free meal? No street dog is this decent. He must want something from me, so just what is he after? "I'm from the United States, so I've heard quite a few strange accents in my time. As for your personality, it's pretty rare to see a street dog who actually sticks his neck out for others. Strays look out for themselves for a reason." She barked as she pushed the meat back towards the chocolate lab. "Anyway, you should take your meat back. Stuff like this can be hard to come by, and I can't accept any charity. Besides, taking someone else's food not only doesn't feel right to me, it makes me feel like a house pet. That's the kind of life I want to walk away from." The female then noticed the look on Nicodemus's face as he tried to ignore the smell from the trash and began to smile a little. She couldn't help but find it a bit funny. "You know, you're not going to live long if you can't get used to the smell of garbage. This is our only source of food unless you prefer stealing food from out of the hands of humans."

Nicodemus shook his head side to side shaking the smell off. Then barks as a reply "I gank any type of food I want from those stupid humans... even if they catch me I still get some food, so its all cool. And I have to admit... I'm not that bright when it comes to strange things. As some dogs say, I'm a sucker when it comes to being curious. Where I come from in the city, I don't have to hunt in the garbage cans for food. I'm not that used to this kind of garbage anyway."Nicodemus studies her face, seeing a faint suspicion. What is up with this chick? Does she think I'm going to jump her or somethin? He then picks up the piece of meat in his jaws and eats it himself, swallowing it in several bites. The chocolate lab then says "well, toodle-loo." He then stands up, nodding a goodbye and pads down the alleyway into the main street.
He looks both ways, carefully pricking his folded ears for anything else strange. He lays down in a shadow-covered corner to relax before he goes off to explore more of the streets the next day. He curls up tight in a ball before falling into a deep sleep. His sides heaving up and down not shortly.

Fawn sat down and curled her tail close to her body as she tried to comprehend what just happened. He didn't want anything from me? What kind of stray is he? It just doesn't make sense. A stray's supposed to look out for himself and no one else. That's how you avoid trouble. That male is not like other street dogs. Why do I find that interesting? The fawn-colored female then began digging through the trash again in hopes of finding something to eat, only to come up empty. "Great, I should've taken that dog's offer!" She growled as she headed down the street, jumping back as soon as she spotted Nicodemus sleeping in the shadowed street corner. Taking a nap out in the open? Does this dog have a death wish?! He'll be easy pickings for the humans from the pound! Or worse, the dog fights! Wait.... Why do I care? It's every stray for himself out here. I should just look out for myself. The ridgeback dog was tempted to walk away and leave the chocolate lab to his fate, but something prevented her from leaving. "Well, now I know why you're so prone to helping others. You really don't know how to help yourself. I may be new in this city, but even I know how dangerous it is to just sleep out in the streets." She muttered as she began nugding Nicodemus with her forepaw. "If you need a place to sleep, you should find an old building. It's a lot safer than a street corner hidden in the shade."

Nicodemus blinks his eyes open feeling a faint nudge in his side. He then says, a bit irritated from being woken up but not rude "I know exactly what I'm doing. When I came here, the Asesinos were on the other side of the city, and they don't come around here to often, I mean what use do they have coming to an old abandoned alley like this? And I'm only taking a short nap, I'm planning on leaving as soon as I wake up, which is about half an hour."She thinks I stick my neck out for others? She could have just walked away like any other normal stray. He then puts his head on his paws and rests. Hm... maybe this chick's right, but still I'm only restin.

Fawn shook her head. "From what I heard, Feroz is a very unpredictable dog. Besides, word on the street is that the Asesinos are looking for new recruits. They'll be searching the entire city for potential pawns. Anyway, that's not what I was referring to when I mentioned danger." The female muttered, sounding a bit annoyed. "The humans often search the streets for stray dogs and cats. If you're not careful, you'll end up in the pound or the fights." The ridgeback then shook her head as Nicodemus just went back to sleep. I only warned you because you helped me. The fawn-colored dog shook her head as she laid down next to the chocolate lab. I must be out of my mind. Still, he helped me before. The least I can do is return the favor.

Nicodemus blinked his eyes open, the sun was setting and pink, purple, and orange colors were plastered all over the sky. Well, not exactly half an hour, but it will have to do for now. He then saw the Rhodesian Ridgeback sleeping next to him. He nudges her with one paw and asks, almost in a whisper "Hey, I'm finding a place to sleep, you should come with me if you want." Then he looks around for an old building, he looks up at the building he was laying against and sees shadows, but no light, no smell of humans, just an abandoned old building. He grunted with approval and saw a hole to the inside, he crawls inside, squeezing himself through the small space. Then finding himself in a big clearing with grey walls and graffiti plastered over them. The floors smelling of old, dusty furniture.
He trots over to a sheltered space in a small room next to the big clearing, up some stairs. He padded up the stairs wearily and heard the floor boards creak faintly. He lifted his head and smelled no humans. Hm... must be safe. Then he sees this small room, with no furniture, just dust on the ground, sheltered from the rest of La Paz, being invisible to dogs or humans that happen to be passing by on the street. Nice place... he thinks to himself as he lies down in a corner, waiting for Fawn to catch up.

Fawn quickly glanced at Nicodemus for a moment. "I was never asleep. I was looking out for you since you wanted to take a nap out in the open." She muttered to the chocolate lab. "You helped me, so it's only right that I help you in return. I don't do that sort of thing often, so don't get used to it." She then began following the male dog, not fully understanding why she was herself. What's with this dog? He's clearly not like any normal stray I've met. Finding the small hole, she managed to pull herself through and looked around the clearing. "Well, it's clear that the humans haven't been around in a long time." She barked before finding the chocolate lab resting in the corner of a nearby room. "You don't have a territory of your own, do you? I'm new to the city so I haven't found a place of my own yet. You seem to have been here longer than I have, so don't you have a home?"

Nicodemus looks in Fawn's direction with soft brown eyes, then barks "I'm a wanderer, I have temporary turfs, like this one right here. If I stay in one place for to long, then the Asesinos will find me, or even worse the dog fights. But right now, I'm lookin for a permanent turf, though it will take a while for me to find the right one."Then he rests his head on his paws and watches calmly as the moon rises, and the bright orange sky slowly fades away. Fawn's pretty nice.. i wish she could stay a bit longer. He thinks to himself, then closes his lazy eyes as he falls into a deep sleep. His sides heaving heavily, he dreams in his sleep making his hind leg twitch once in a while. The moonlight making Nicodemus's chocolate fur almost silver.
